From Software Engineer to Seminarian: Iron Sharpened Iron

By Alison Simpson

Regardless of our age or life stage, we all face the journey of vocational discernment. On this path, accompaniment is vital. Every relationship, from a connection made through spiritual direction to a connection made at a networking event, plays an important supporting role.

For Randall Williams (aka @ironinquisitor), the connections he made through Young Catholic Professionals (YCP) was pivotal in his discernment of entering seminary to become a priest. Randall's story is just one powerful example of the vital role the community plays in a vocational journey. YCP, with its blend of professional networking and Catholic spirituality, created a space where his vocational questions could be explored and nurtured. Now, let's hear more about his experience firsthand. We asked Randall to share the full story in the following Q&A.

How did your involvement with the Young Catholic Professionals (YCP) community impact you personally and professionally?

“Joining YCP was a turning point in both my spiritual and professional journey. After graduating college, I left behind a vibrant Catholic community and returned to my home diocese in San Francisco unsure of how to sustain that momentum. Faith is like an inner fire—it needs fellowship and community to stay lit. Within months of joining YCP, I found myself surrounded by new friends, and each event left me spiritually nourished and energized.”

“At the time I was working as a software engineer, a field that is ever-changing. Talking to older members helped me identify which skills to prioritize for long-term growth. Their guidance—and even a few referrals—opened doors to new job opportunities and gave me clarity in navigating my career.”

Can you share a specific memory or experience from your time with YCP that was particularly meaningful or impactful for you?

“One of the most striking moments came while leading our Advent retreat. In the middle of the weekend, I paused and looked around at everyone gathered. I was struck by a wave of awe and gratitude. Here we were—friends from across the country and the world, from Lebanon, Brazil, to Guatemala—united not by profession or background, but by our shared faith in Jesus Christ.”

“Among us were engineers, doctors, teachers, and creatives. Despite our differences, we were one family in Christ, striving to live out our vocations with integrity and purpose. That moment reminded me that YCP isn’t just a network—it’s a spiritual home for young professionals who want to become saints.”

Did the community and resources provided by YCP play a role in helping you discern your calling? If so, how?

“Definitely. As the Director of Evangelization for my local chapter, I worked closely with our chaplains, who are members of the Legionaries of Christ. Through retreats, planning, and spiritual direction, witnessing their ministry and pastoral care deeply impacted me. I saw firsthand the fruit of their ministry and the joy & peace they brought to our community.”

“Discerning the priesthood can be a lonely path, but YCP also connected me with other like minded young men. Two are now Legionaries, and one is a Dominican. Their witness gave me the courage to take the plunge and apply to seminary. In a world where serious faith is rare, YCP gave me the support and fraternity I needed to say yes to God’s call.”

Lastly, what would you say to a young professional considering joining YCP?

“In today’s culture, it’s easy to feel lonely as a practicing Catholic—especially in professional environments where faith is often shamed and misunderstood. YCP is a vibrant oasis in a sea of secularism. It’s a place where your convictions aren’t just respected—they’re shared, strengthened, and celebrated.”

“Iron sharpens iron. Through YCP, you’ll grow intellectually, professionally, and spiritually. You’ll find mentors, friends, and opportunities to serve. Above all, you'll learn to sanctify the ordinary moments of your daily work, offering them as quiet sacrifices to God. In the spirit of St. Joseph, you'll be equipped to labor faithfully as a witness to Christ in the workplace.”

Randall's powerful witness shows us that whether God is calling you to the priesthood, marriage, or the single life, YCP provides a powerful community filled with faith, fellowship, and fraternity to answer one’s call in life. It's in this supportive environment that young professionals find the confidence to seek guidance and the tools to translate their faith into action. Be sure to join us as we explore how these intentional relationships are key to building a strong Catholic culture in your professional life.
